Mount Rushmore Fireworks Display Ill Advised – Fire Expert
A fire expert said a planned fireworks display at the Mount Rushmore is ‘’ill-advised’’ due to the abnormally dry conditions and summer wildfires.
A fire expert has said a July 3 fireworks display at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is ‘’ill-advised’’ due to the abnormally dry conditions and summer wildfires.
The event is expected to attract over 7,500 revellers with the president of the United States, Donald Trump in attendance.
The former fire management officer for Mount Rushmore, Bill Gabbert said shooting fireworks over ponderosa pine forest is extremely flammable and should not be done.
“Burning debris, the burning embers and unexploded shells fall into a ponderosa pine forest and ponderosa pine is extremely flammable,” said Gabbert.
The Mount Rushmore fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day has since 2009 not been observed due to a fire danger after a pine beetle infestation.
The U.S. Drought Monitor recently labelled almost all of southwestern South Dakota including most of the Black Hills as ‘’abnormally dry.’’
However, the National Park Service, which manages the memorial, has assured that fireworks display at Mount Rushmore poses only a slight fire risk.
Ian Fury, Republican Government Kristi Noem’s communication director revealed that the park service in April has taken several precautions, including performing an environmental assessment and conducting a large burn within the memorial’s borders.
